A handmade enamel and copper spiral necklace with a sterling silver chain.
Spirals are an important part of ancient Celtic culture. They are thought to represent spiritual growth, connection with the sacred and cosmic awareness. I’ve loved spirals for as long as I can remember and in this pendant I’ve given the spiral a crooked tail to represent the wavering path to enlightenment.
This enamel and copper spiral necklace was created in several stages. First, I hand-hammered the copper base for texture. I hand-torched thin layers of lead-free enamel for depth. I then encased a hand-hammered brass tailed spiral which represents the wavering path to enlightenment. The next step involved multiple firings to create a blending effect.
For the rear I artificially aged and weathered the hammered copper with alcohol inks. Then I sealed and polished with 5 layers of microcrystalline archive standard wax. This gives a secure seal and ensures longevity of the ageing effect. Finally, I attached the pendant to an 18 inch sterling silver curb chain. The attachment is a gold-filled permanent twist-lock closure which guarantees a safe and solid join.
